We drove back at the same speed. The results was 26 mpg on the HHR and 24.8 for the impala. Not a big difference especially when you consider how much bigger the impala is, with a little work you could fit the HHR in the trunk. In the city is were the bigger engine losses ground, 14.7 aveage vs. 20 for the HHR.

For the difference in mpg I perfer the imp, it a hell of a lot faster too.
Something to keep in mind - the Impala is much more aerodynamic tha an HHR. It's kind of like comparing a Camaro to a motorhome...

Still...coming back from the SEMA show in Vegas I got 36.4mpg on the highway and averaged 30.6mpg for the return trip. Considering I was running between 75-105 I'd say that's pretty darn good!

Give the little HHR some credit....

Just as a point of reference for mpg...I currently am driving a 1.8L Toyota Matrix automatic.....during the months of April to about mid Octobet I avg 35-37 mpg....as soon as the winter gas blend hits my mpg drops down to anywhere from 29-32 mpg.....so basically in the colder months you may see anywhere from a 3-5 mpg diff...

In the winter be sure to keep an eye on tire pressure. This can greatly affect your MPG.

Only in the winter? Are the laws of gravity, motion, and resistance different in the winter?

Tire pressure should be monitored on a regular basis, year round. Unless, where you live, you have snow on the ground 365 days.

I have yet to take a longish highway trip to see how the highway mileage fares. Around town, our HHR with the 2.4L engine gets better mileage than our previous vehicle, a 2003 Malibu with a 3.1L V6, did.

We regularly get 150 to 200km more per tank of gas than the Malibu got. The HHRs gas tank is about 12 litres larger than the Malibus was, but the HHR weighs 100 lbs more than the Malibu did.

A 5-speed automatic or better gear ratios on the 4-speed automatic are needed.

What do people view as poor gas mileage? What mileage did you expect to achieve?

My highway mileage (averaging 70-80 mph) has been consistently 32 mpg - 34 mpg; city driving in the I gear has been 20 mpg - 22 mpg. Coming from an Infiniti FX35 averaging 15 mpg, I have no complaints.

When i travel from philly to pittsburg i average about 30-31 mpg but on the way back i can usually get about 34-36 mpg with a best of 41 mpg for about a half hour at one point when i reset the meter. btw its a 2.2 auto.

HHR New to Me/First Post

I drive between 1-2 thousand miles a week on my courier job and in the approx 2 weeks I have had the HHR (2-LT,2.4L, 4spd auto, most of the bells and whistles) I have driven 1500 miles with 4 fill-ups. With 1-89oct BP gas I averaged 29 mpg city and hwy, with 3-93oct BP, Citgo I have averaged 31 mpg.

Admittedly most of my driving is HWY at around 70-75. I also do not try to come off the line at stops in a big hurry and I guess this helps.

The weather here in SE Tennessee has varied between 25-50 since I have bought the car and I do not know if the gas purveyor's sell winter mix this far South.

Only mod's I have made were to replace the factory headlight lamps with Sylvania Silver Star's and change the wiper blades to Bosch ICON's. the headlight change was a huge improvement, no data on the wipes yet! no precip.

Love the Car!

What I think is happening here with these high mpg number is that you guys are resetting while driving on the expressway, probably with the cruise control on. You take a quick look at the DIC and wow. When I do that I get like 36 even 40 mpg, but this is unrealistic.

If you want real highway milage reset right before you get on the express way. The same goes for city driving, if you just come off a 70 mile trip and drive around the city for 20 miles without resetting you going to get good number but they are not accurate.
