I use the gallons replaced into miles driven formula for determining MPG. Not one hundred percent accurate but close. I am reasonably sure that by staying around 2500 RPM (70-75) with the cruise on will deliver 30ish MPG on the HWY. The DIC is annoying.

HHR-Runner, does your HHR actually do 2500 while at 70 or 75 mph? I'm usually runs around 3000 RPM at that speed with the cruise, 2.4L and automatic.

I did a pretty nice little road trip this past weekend between GA and SC. Burned 2.5 tanks of fuel, all 87. Driving was a 50/50 mix of interstate and highways. I finally saw 32 MPG on the DIC . At the pumps I was staying at at 29 MPG with a calculator. In the interstate, the cruise was set at 80, on highways, about 5 over the limit. The last fillup the DIC showed 29.7 and the calcualtor showed 29.1. There was a wide variety of driving here.

I average about 26 to/from work on normal driving.

It did not when I first got the car but after driving 3000 miles it seems to stay around 2500 at these speeds depending on the terrain. I read on one of the threads that the transmisson learns your driving habits(?). Also the outside temp seems to affect the MPG also.

I think alot of people are not resetting the DIC everytime they fill up, Therefore the MPG avg is not acurate. I reset mine everytime, and when I change from local driving to long range driving. Local I get about 29 driving it like its stolen, and sometimes more than 33 hwy.

Tireman, is that mileage with a 5-speed? I'm approaching 9,000 miles with an automatic and have noticed the mileage getting better with local driving. I'm at about 24 mpg right now but I've only seen 30 mpg on the highway if I stay below 70 mph. At 80, mine runs at 3,000 rpms which seems awfully high to me. But, I never have a problem finding more power when I need it. It's a great car to travel in!

I'm pleased with the gas mileage I'm getting with my 2.2 automatic. I get 27 mpg, combined highway/city. Which is right on the money as far as the EPA estimates of 30 hwy and 23 city.

In fact, the HHR is probably the first car I ever owned that lives up to its EPA ratings. Every other car I've owned usually fell at least 10% short of the EPA estimates.

I believe you're right.

After the first couple fill-ups I didn't reset the DIC, and it was reading about 1.1 or 1.2 higher than my actual MPG of 27.2. I reset the DIC after my most recent fill-up, and it was just about right on the money at 27.3.

Thus far I'm pleased with the accuracy of my DIC.

No, its an Automatic. When I picked my HHR up from the dealer the other day, the service writer said mine was a freak of nature. He said mine is by far the "peppiest" and fastest 2.4 HHR he as ever driven in. And I have done nothing to it, but drive it like a mad-man since the day I bought it.

I reset the DIC each and every fillup. The MPG on the DIC has always been high than actual. Filled this morning, the DIC stated 28.2, actual was 26.1. It usually about 1mpg differance. Half the fuel used on this tank (only needed 9.8 gallons) was all highway driving.
