From the Manual:
Up-Shift Light
Your vehicle may have an up-shift light. When this light comes on, you should shift to the next higher gear if weather, road, and traffic conditions allow you to. This light is located in your instrument panel cluster to the left of the tachometer.
From the Manual Trans Section:
Up-Shift Light
If your vehicle has a manual transaxle, it may have an up-shift light. This light will show you when to shift to the next higher gear for the best fuel economy. When this light comes on, you can shift to the next higher gear if weather, road and traffic conditions let you. For the best fuel economy, accelerate slowly and shift when the light comes on. While you accelerate, it is normal for the light to go on and off if you quickly change the position of the accelerator. Ignore the light when you downshift.
It seems the key operative here is "may."
Some cars have it, some do not. If it is that important to you, you might consult your local dealership and have them correct the problem.
Hope it helps,

I always wondered about the shift light, since it never came on when it was suppose to, if it did (i.e. "may", per the user manual for optimum fuel economy). However, yesterday when I was running out 2nd gear (5 speed), it turned on! I have the 2.4. It is nice to know it is there, and as a real shift light.
