Speedo quit
Speedo quit
my girlfriend has an 07 with a 2.2 and automatic. A week ago the speedo quit on her one morning. Now it dd work for me yesterday but nothing this morning. Everything else is working and no check engine light. I also turned the cruise on and it seemed to maintain whatever speed and the odometer seems to be working correctly. When set in MPH it sits at 0 and skips up sometimes to 2 or 3. If you set it in KPH it jumps to 30 and stays there.
I'm new to HHRs so does this sound more like the gauge cluster needing to be replaces, VSS, or something more specific to the HHR?

Frankly, this is the first I've heard of it.
And man, it could be almost anything. MAYBE a contact issue with the gage cluster....although I would think it would be just at the speedo contact since you are not having other dash indicator problems.
Maybe at the pick up point, which I think is at the ecm.
Hate to say this, but this may be one of the issues that definitely needs to go to the dealer.
Others members may have valuable trouble shooting suggestions.

to the forum pkt1213.Since you've indicated the cruise control is functional and the odometer is working, that really points at a failure in the gauge cluster itself. If the VSS is malfunctioning, or you have a problem with the ECM you'd be unable to use the cruise control and the odometer would be nonfunctional.
As Snoopy has indicated this might be a thing to have checked by your dealer or a good tech in an independent shop, but most likely you'll need to replace the gauge cluster.
While the cluster from an '06 should work in your '07 pkt1213, I'd try to find an '07 cluster because there were some changes in the ECM between the first and second model years among other changes. Someone here has probably swapped clusters between the model years and maybe they'll chime in.
My guess would be the cluster. I had the cluster in my 2007 go bad, which fortunately for me was while the car was still under warrantee. The dealer replaced the cluster, have not had a problem since. In my case the speedometer and the tach would not work, but the failure was intermittant.
pkt1213,
I suggest taking this vehicle into the dealer to get it diagnosed. Let us know how everything works out, thank you!
