If it was cross threaded it should be leaking.

I would be thinking drilling a hole across the "nut" part big enough to put a screwdriver through then twisting.

It is plastic, so breaking it is an option.

Get the correct tool for the future. It is listed in the aforementioned Amazon link.
It was leaking. After messing with it for so long and not getting anywhere, I decided to just stop and come at in another day. I was just going to keep he old filter in. Well, after I put everything back together, I started the car and started backing out. That's when I noticed an oil trail following me and found out oil was spewing out of the filter cap area.

I have the right tools, but there is just something wrong with the cap.

Just rip that thing off with anything you got and make sure you order the new cap and while you are at it like donbrew said if you click the link the "frequently bought together" section lists the EXACT nut you need. I bought mine at a local parts store (all of them carry it) and its been fine for me. Lesson learned is probably dont go to those sorts of repair shops again.... If they messed up this bad with a simple oil change God knows what they might break if doing any sort of real maintenance or repair. Since it is now leaking to a spewing point park the car and wait for the package!

????
I'm confused. If the nut is rounded off, how did you get an impact wrench/socket to even get a grip ?

I just ended up towing it to a shop and paying $50 bucks which wasn't bad. I didn't want to tear the cap off on the off chance that the threads stayed in their grooves. Then I would have really been in a mess.

The last time I had my oil changed was when I had my engine repaired from a broken timing belt (trashed the engine) and the shop over tightened my lugnuts on my wheel. I had to rent an impact wrench to get them break their seal, so I think the shop either over tightened the oil filter cap, or ended up cross threading it in. I doubt I'll be going back to that shop.

I hope the shop didn't replace a "timing belt" and charge you for it as no HHR has a timing belt; the engine is chain driven. Time for a new mechanic if that is that they told you.
