Sunroof rattle?

Has anyone else had problems with the sunroof assembly getting loose? I noticed it recently going over bumps... then I checked, and you can very easily move the sunroof straight up by about a quarter of an inch (against the weather stripping, of course), with its return voyage causing a vibration against the metal.

Before I waste time looking, do these come loose at all? Just so you know, the sunroof does NOT leak nor does it cause wind noise.. it looks perfectly normal when parked.. it just seems to "bounce"..

Hello fellow local NJ HHR owner(I am in Oceanport).

My 2009 HHR sunroof does exactly the same thing yours does.As yours mine rattles over bumps.Has been doing this for about 2 years.I hear it rattle almost everytime I drive.Does not leak or cause wind noise though. Also looks normal when parked.I never pushed it up as you have out of fear of screwing something up.

The other issue I have with the sunroof is that I hear a "click" from it when it is opening(during the sliding to fully open position). One time the roof got stuck halfway open while it was sliding to the fully open position.I then hit the closed button and it closed normal.Never happened again though.

I just ignore it for the most part.It is not leaking so I don't really worry about it.I don't use the sunroof that much anyway. If I do it is usually just in the tilt(vent) position for the most part.

The glass will move/float up and down over bumps and when you slam the doors, it's part of the design. That floating motion can cause rattles, which can usually(but not always)be quelled by lubrication of the sunroof mechanism.

You can apply a weatherstrip lube like Napa Sil-Glyde to the tracks, but apply it sparingly and carefully because it can make a mess.

I get the "click" too. I forgot to mention that the first summer I had the car the little "wind baffle" that pops up broke off (cheap crappy casting for the retaining bracket). I bought a new bracket but it comes blank (you need to mark and drill the new holes yourself...), and the process for removing the roof panel to be able to re-rivet the new piece seemed like it wasn't worth the hassle. I only got the "click" after this bracket broke off but it doesn't seem to be the reason it is loose as the movement is at the back end of the roof, not the front. Plus, that little baffle didn't do much anyway.. just caught the odd bug here and there.

I know they are supposed to move a LITTLE bit, but this seems like abnormal movement. I guess I'll have to have a look in there and see if some lube will shut it up.

I'm now getting the rattle too (pretty severe), and the click is so loud it's scary, it almost sounds like something is going to snap. (I too replaced the deflector bracket.) I actually noticed the black coating coming off at the joint. I'm wondering if I mounted it just slightly off...

I'll try greasing it as suggested in this thread, but has anyone else come up with a fix that alleviates the rattle AND stops this click that sounds so catastrophic?
