Mine is sitting at 210K and still has the original chain. No noise, no rattle, no codes. I did pull off the valve cover a couple months ago just to inspect the chain and guides (the best I could). They all looked good but I am planning on doing a timing chain job on it next week. I am considering not replacing the water pump, but with over 200k seems like it would be good insurance to go ahead and do it.

There are several kits on RockAuto. Not sure if I should go with Cloyes, Melling or ACDelco, I like the Melling 34201SBX because it has the upgraded bolt. I could go with the ACDelco 12680750 Kit ($93) and order the ACDelco 252821 water pump separately ($73).

Suggestions?

 

You should get the bolt in any case. Cloyes makes ACDelco, I suspect they also make the Melling.
Not all water pumps are equal; some have plastic impellers, some have metal. Whatever you trust; I'm not sure there is a difference.
Don't forget gaskets.

 

Yea, I was going to do the upgraded bolt regardless. I will be doing this w/o removing the engine. Is it advisable to do both chains or do most people just do the main one and leave the balance chain alone?

As far as plastic vs metal impeller, I would not trust the plastic because of the heat.

Do it all while in there. Might also inspect other easily worn items like the air intake ducting and filter housing grommets.

 

If you replace the balance shaft chain as well, you won't need to get the special tool to hold the chain in place while you replace the water pump.

That is reassuring. People do comment about my patience so I think I will feel confident to do it. Meanwhile, I don't drive mine hard at all esp since I have no idea the history of it prior to 2020 when i got it at 160K or so miles. But my guess is the timing chain has never been done.

 

At that mileage, you have to ask yourself, “ Do I feel lucky? “
