My timing gears indicate that the engine has jumped time or the chain has stretched. Is there a way to tell if valve damage has occurred? 2008 HHR 2.2 Motor cranks but no start. I will not crank again until I know about the valves.

 

Reset the chain to time and then, perform a compression test.

 

Or, get a bore scope camera and look through the spark plug hole. They are under $20 and attach to a smart phone.
You are probably OK unless the chain broke.

The timing marks don’t line up! The crankshaft at 5 o’clock, the intake cam at 2 o’clock and the exhaust cam at 10 o’clock

Isolated, could you explain what’s happening that makes you conclude that?

 

That how you can tell the timing marks in the sprockets and chain aren’t in the correct position, depending on how much they are out, the valves could be bent from hitting the pistons.
