As to your dome light issues Treble Hook, check each door switch by pushing them vigorously a few times, one may be sticking or corroded inside.

Treble hook. X2 on what 843de posted. You may have a bad door switch.
May I also add. Check your dome light to make sure its switch is not in the manual "On" position.
You didn't state what year your HHR is but I believe there is a slight design difference of the dome light, depending on year.
The reason it turns off after 20 minutes is the cars computer shuts it off. Nice little battery saving feature designed into the cars electronics.
It should do the same time out if you were to leave a door open when the car is parked and not running.

I don't know about your particular car, since you don't give specifics, but have you tried the dimmer switch. On some years it turns the dome on when turned full right.

You shouldn't have to add a separate toggle switch to turn a light off. My dome light stays on when I'm driving. I think that might be a safety issue. It will shut off 20 minutes later after I park and lock the vehicle. But it was shutting off immediately after the door was closed. My rearview mirror lights shut off after the door is closed and engine started. How do you get the dome light to go out?
