Using a temporary shorter serpentine belt

Are you sure it was the k050350 belt?
The asst. service manager looked at it and exclaimed that there was no way that the belt was long enough. I asked him to step out and look at it.
He seemed to back off a bit.
It was late in the day, and I didn't insist.
I think that I should go back and ask him to rack it up and give it a try. Should I?

Good morning fellow HHR owners. My 2006 HHR 2.4L was running perfect until a couple of weeks ago. First my door handle broke, then my compressor seized up. Right now I can't afford to replace the compressor so I am looking to put in a shorter serpentine belt as a temporary solution until I get the compressor replaced. I recognize the inherent issues that may arise by bypassing the compressor however I need the vehicle running. Any ideas on what length I should purchase? I am guessing 35", or slightly shorter. I know a 28 1/4 is too short. Unless you guys know away to get the compressor pulley to spin freely.

35-1/2" might be a little easier.
BTW, that's always good info to keep on hand.
When the air pump on my van seized, it took about 6 or so different belts to try.
Amazing how much difference half an inch can make.

I just had the same issue with the AC compressor seizing up. First I replaced with the standard belt and it seemed to be running and spinning. A few days later, the car wouldn't turn; so, I though the starter had died. Ordered a new starter and when I went to install I just gave it try to start. Car started and smoked up and snapped the new belt. Car had been making a rattle at low idle when it was running with the new belt.
Started car with no belt and it was perfectly normal sounding. Alternator spins freely.
My HHR has 361,000 miles on it; so, I am not going to put new AC in it. Bought the shorter belt at O'Reilly Auto 35.25 inches part number K050345. No noise and does not appear to be binding. It only needs to run teh alternator; therefore, I think it is okay for a permanent fix.
