Well, it finally made it to the shop ( GM mechanics house). He looked over all the parts, the SAAB water pump was the same. He said the tensioners looked the same and chains look good or similar. He though the guides looked like they were constructed a little different. We made the decision to give them a try. FYI, my car has 204k with the original timing set, the tensioner was all the way out and the chain had lots of slack. The car still seemed to run fine with a few exceptions. The turbo has had some erratic tendencies and a P0016 light. Hopefully the repairs last another 100k. I would be very satisfied with that.

Was the chain off a tooth?

Got the car back today! The culprit was the upper guide broke at the bolt that fastens it to the block. I haven’t seen the bolt, but according to the mechanic it hadn’t start to wear the head yet. Anyway the car does run much better and seems to idle a lot better. Also the turbo doesn’t drop of unexpectedly, it’s all nice and smooth again....hopefully I can get another 100k out o this car!

Thanks for all of your help!

yeah! It’s alive again! This problem is why the bolt needs to be replaced by one of these, even Dorman carries them

I don’t know if it got one of those, he used a new bolt brought home from work. Is that something special?

Yes, the GM bolt tends to snap off and the guide gets chewed up

My guides looked a lot like that, too.

OP, it sounds like super news for you. Very happy for you!
