Sounds like the rev limiter.... test it out by stomping on the gas and leaving your foot in it until you hit the limiter again. You'll probably be able to tell if it was the same sort of "engine cut-out"....

Not to get too technical, but the rev-limiter is more of a bog-down than a cut-out in my opinion.

Maybe it was a "bog-down". But this all just interpretation of the words cut out. Under heavy acceleration the decrease in power felt like a cut out. It was not like the car died. It basically felt like I took my foot off the gas with the car still in gear.

The car is full stock.

I was reading the Owners Manual and I could not find anything about a rev limiter. All I found was the following on page 4-25

Notice: If the engine is operated with the tachometer in the red warning area, the vehicle could be damaged and the damages would not be covered by the vehicle warranty. Do not operate the engine with the tachometer in the red warning area.

Gee thanks GM. I kind of knew that. But if there is a rev limiter, would'nt the engine not be allow to even get in the red warning area?

Yes !! Except in some instances the rev. limiter is 100-200 RPM OVER THE INDICATED REDLINE. So, the MANUAL text is a "just in case".

I don't believe you can actually hit the rev. limiter in high gear, whether manual trans. or auto. Members have repeatedly indicated this in attempts to measure top speed. I imagine the aerodynamics just will not allow this.

However, GM's rev. limiter limitations is easily attainable in the lower gear, especially 1st and second (I had an especially difficult time with the paddle shifts of my Vette until getting use to it).

So, I suspect the issue you encountered was the rev. limiter, without realizing it.
