Doing timing, work, balance, chain, crankshaft sprocket at 11 o’clock
You can see at the upper left the exhaust balance, chain color link is in line with the mark, the same follows for the intake side. Crankshaft sprocket from what I read is supposed to be at the 12 o’clock position. I just have a gut feeling something isn’t right.
So the top guy bolt broke on my 08 SS and I’ve replaced the water pump and now have started putting the balance chain on. The links lineup with the intake and exhaust balance sprockets, but the crankshaft sprocket key is at 11 o’clock, and not 12 o’clock as most videos show. Brain is kind of fried to as what I’ve done wrong. Any help would be appreciated.
I went ahead and pulled the sprocket off the crankshaft to take a closer look and noticed that it is somewhat movable? Further disassembly shows a spring arrangement on the circumference. Maybe it wasn’t keyed properly? This is the original from 2008.
The key should be a 12 o'clock. The mark should be at about 5:00.
There is a link to FREE service manuals in my sig.
I have never seen a 2.0 sprocket but, the2.2/2.4 does not have springs.
Here is a pdf of the procedure:

I’ve cleaned up and reassembled the sprocket the best way I could figure to do so, and I noticed that the pegs on the underside are different, and now the timing marks look like where they’re supposed to be. I’m wondering if when the guide bolt broke the crankshaft sprocket started to give, or maybe during rotating the motor to exhaust, TDC, the springs slipped or something. Everything fits together snuggly. Can’t seem to find much about this particular sprocket, it’s even difficult to source a replacement.
fastsuv has more experience with the LNF engine, which is different, I suggest you ensure the crankshaft is at 12 o’clock the #1 piston is at TDC then slide the balance shaft sprocket into place. The timing chain sprocket on the crankshaft must be at 5 o’clock.
