Intermediate steering shaft

All you need to do is get measurements and go to a GOOD parts store. A good counter man can match them up. rebuilding u-joints is machine shop bread and butter.
The part number 19-1010 seems to be a generic part number, lots of GoOgle hits

My 2010 HHR-SS (1 owner-me, 121,000 original miles) is just starting to have a little play in the upper U-joint of the intermediate steering shaft.
No one I've contacted is willing to cut the shaft and weld on a new U-joint (for example, the Kawasaki part # 19-1010 referenced above) due to liability of messing with the steering.
Option A---Rebuild the u-joint that's wearing?: Can anyone tell me with 100% surety that the U-joints of THIS particular shaft can be rebuilt? Has anyone had it done and, if so, which machine shop did it?
Option B---Replace the u-joint(s)?: Has anyone had the Kawasaki U-joint welded to the shaft---and did it work? If so, can you tell me who did the repair? Last question: are the upper and lower ball joints of this intermediate shaft identical?
Option C---Go with a wrecking yard part?
Help!

The SS intermediate steering shaft is obsolete, a used one from a pick a part is a shot in the dark, it might be even worse then yours. Replace the u joint just like a drive shaft press out , press in , a bench vise is very handy or a machine shop can do that for you.

Thanks Oldblue. To be sure, by "Replace the U-Joint," you mean rebuild the U-joint that is on the shaft by replacing the bearings, right? No cutting, no welding, right?
