This is the vacuum test rig that I setup. It taps into line running from the solenoid to the bypass valve and allows me to monitor the vacuum signal the solenoid is sending to the bypass valve.

you should be able to bypass the whole solenoid altogether by rerouting the vacuum lines and replacing the solenoid with a t fitting. the vacuum lines and solenoid are supposed to look like the picture below. reroute them to look like the picture above and pull the solenoid and put a t fitting in its place

i would try the vacuum tank bypass first then the vacuum lines will be where the need to be to simply replace the solenoid with a t fitting. long term.....dunno....i would at least replace the faulty solenoid and possibly leave the vacuum tank bypassed

look up mongorat427 on css.net...........he has a bypass valve for 25 bucks if u need one. the solenoid is available for 45 bucks from ced

I did this by pass of the vacuum tank and my car doesn't bogg down when coming to stop. It's nice little mod.

Looks like its the bypass valve that's the problem on my car. Had it act up with the gage installed and the valve is getting a good vacuum signal from the solenoid. Now I need to get the dealer to replace it...

GM customer service called today and told me that the dealership has exhausted all its resources and can't duplicate the issue, nor fix it. He said "we're stuck" to which I replied, no "I'm stuck"... He basically told me to start over with another dealer. Anybody want to buy an HHR???

I know this won't make things any better....but I'm in the same boat...exactly.

BTW...if you think its the bypass solenoid...why not just replace it and see if it fixes the problem. So far, I have installed about $1000 worth of parts on my car to try to figure out the problem...still haven't figured it out yet...

I think its the bypass valve. The solenoid is working properly. I think the bypass valve is sticking open and bypassing the boost. I'm at $450 so far, I'm trying to get this covered under the powertrain warranty. The GM customer service is directing the dealer to replace the solenoid, at my cost. I know its good because I can watch it work with the vacuum gage, so I have to get the customer service district manager to direct the dealer to replace the bypass valve, what a pain...

Is your problem intermittent or consistant? Mine is pretty random so I installed the vacuum gage to watch the vacuum signal to the bypass valve when it acts up. The solenoid sends the bypass valve a pressure signal to shut and a vacuum signal to open based on the ECU's command signal. My solenoid is sending the right signal, so its either the bypass valve or turbo itself. I'm learning alot about how this car works.
