Lightbulb Tire Size/Wheel Clearance Question

Hey hows it going?

I'm up for new tires on my HHR and wanted to go with something slightly larger to fill out some of the fender well without investing in bigger wheels, lowering, body chops etc.......

I have the 215/50R17 stock shiny aluminum wheels on right now. I like the wheels so I'm keeping them. I was thinking a 235/50R17 would be slightly wider, slightly taller (slightly off on the speedo) but I don't know if it will clear without rubbing on anything like the strut, the fender wells, either under compression or on turn in.

Has anyone run this size on the standard 17" wheel? Does anyone know if this will rub. I guess I could always have them installed and try it but would prefer to know ahead of time.

Thanks!

Your best bet would be a 245/45R-17.

to the site! A 225/50/17 on stock wheels fits nicely...a bit closer to everything, but no rubbing. Here they are on mine with Eibach pro lowering springs...BTW, I thought about the 235/50/17, but tire choices are limited & I think they may rub.

Thanks for the response!

jeffs369, I like how your tires bow out a little instead of looking flat...maybe it's just me but I think tires should be round ;-). Are those stock width wheels?

tireman, do your tires rub under full lock? It seems they would do that with the extra width room?

Nope. I haul three teenagers and all their luggage every weekend and have never rubbed.

The clearance pinchpoint is the strut flange, not the fender well.

My wheels are 17" x 7" G6/Aura steelies...a bit wider than stock.

True in the front, but in the rear, these taller tires come fairly close to the plastic inner wheelwell liner also.
