A lot of that fresh air is hitting the front of the air box and blasting all over the place , Mostly around the air box . If the hole on the side of the box is opened in your pic, (which it is) Most of the air your getting under heavy throttle, Comes from that hole , Not the spaced air box lid . I tried this before the cut up hood . It's sucking air from the easiest point , Open hole.
But it does sound crazy, With the air suckin in.

And i'm not knockin your setup , I'm just telling you my results on that set up.
