I found that they are different part numbers 12578515 and 12621505. It is unclear if they came attached to the new head or not, I've read both.

The non-VVT uses the same part. Maybe whoever put the sprockets on didn't pay attention.

I amend that:
the 2.2 VVT uses 12621505 on both
the 2.4 uses the different ones
and the intake cams are different
exh cams are the same

I'm afraid I'm of no further use. The only thing is that tensioner the engine is supposed to have the hydraulic version; I don't know if the mechanical version works or not.

Here's our how-to https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/how-...-engine-56053/

I got the Harbor Freight one, there's information in the how-to for how I had to modify it so it would work.

Please post a picture of the sprockets, they should both have a triangle and a diamond, I can’t see the full circumference of either sprocket.

Just to clarify,
2.2 VVT engine uses 505 on both camshafts
2.4 uses 505 on exhaust, and 515 on intake.

I wonder if the shop put a 2.4 intake camshaft in by mistake? Not the phaser, Charlie said those were his used ones. Or maybe they shipped a 2.4 head?

Hmm , a 2.4 head would come with 2.4 cam shafts which would require the two different sprockets.
could you post the invoice for your new cylinder head?
