The K&N is a box because it is a Cold Air Intake system. Just like the stock system. It uses the stock plumbing to pull air from the fender. If it were in the open like the CGS system, it would pull warm air from inside the engine compartment. That would be counter productive. The Airraid system "seals" to the hood to form the box and and also uses the stock plumbing to pull air from the fender area. It gives you a nice combo of looks when you open the hood, and function with the hood closed.

Disclaimer:

I have not installed or tested any of these intake systems. I am simply repeating information that I have read on the forums or the companies web sites. So, please do not take my word as gospel.

What they need, is to leave the top of the K&N box open. Seal it to a cowl induction hood, and get rid of the inlet tube all together. I just saw the "too cool" cowl indution hood in the boutique.

Yea.. I've been eyeing that for awhile.. I just ain't got the dough to get it

It shouldn't be to hard to make your hood a true cowl induction in accordance with the scoop.. It would be a good mod for someone who has the cash to spend
