Well, they need to update that page for the class of licenses now issued. Otherwise good info, but limited to Amateur Radio.

What I have to wonder is why a radio as capable as the 857 limited itself to amateur only when adding the CB frequencies would be so easy with a power limiter. But, alas the 857 is way outside my needs and abilities. Also very intimidating with all those buttons and controls.

What I would like is a low end unit that has CB, 2M, 70CM, FRS, GMRS on the Xmit side and adding AM & FM on the Rec side. One radio for the whole vehicle, Oh it would be nice to have a CD player as well.

 

OK gang I meant to post yesterday but "playing radio" got the better of me I wish I had the ability to post pictures... no I have the technical ability but not the picture taking ability, so I'll try to explain my install. First I have a FT 8800R mounted just under the upper dash "glove box" with the control cables running into the glove box and thru to the main radio which is under the passenger seat and secured to the cross brace under the seat. My FT 857D is just above the AM/FM and cables run down to the main radio this time secured under the drivers seat to the cross brace. I originally used zip ties to secure the radios, until they started breaking, hey they were cheap ones, so now the radios are secured with hose clamps!! The radios ain't goin no place!!! This also makes the seat frame the ground for the radios!
Both radio separation kits are secure to the dash with Industrial 3M double sided sticky tape that when remove leaves no sticky behind! The FT 8800R has been in place since I bought the HHR almost 2 years ago, survived 100+ degree summers and below freezing winters without any sign of coming loose, until you want it to!
Now I can talk antennas in a later post but that is how the radios and heads are mounted. OH I got a couple of hard plastic microphone clips at a truck stop and used the same tape to mount them out of the way but convient.
Hope all this made sense and if you look at your dash it should.

SargeRN, what kind of antenna are you running for the 857? I was thinking of the ATAS120 but after reading some of the reviews on eham I don't know if I want one now. I hope to pick up either an 857 or the 897 at the hamfest in Orlando next month but I will be using it in the house to begin with, then later after I get a bigger radio I will move the 857 (if thats what I end up with) to the car. I was thinking of mounthing the control head above the center air vents in front of the storage box and running the wires like you did but I was planing on mounting the main unit in the rear near the battery.

Might want to reconsider. The mic plugs into the main radio, not the control head on the 857; don't know about the 897. Is there a mic extension cord available or advisable for that distance.

 

I am guessing the remote kit for the 857 would have a mic extension, otherwise whats the use in being able to separate the two parts?

 

I never "guess" when planning if I don't have to, but you are right - a call to Yaesu puts the cable lengths at 3 meters for both the Mic and control cables.

I plan to put a through the roof antenna for VHF/UHF at the middle light location. A hatch mount for HF. The seperation kit comes with a mic extension as well.

My question (haven''t got the HHR manual yet) is how do you remove the overhead light to access the roof and hopw do you remove the pillar cover behind the driver?

The lens of the light removes from the passenger side. Just get a small screwdriver and pry the end down, the rest is a friction fit. The electrical connection on mine was real tight.

As far as location you might want to find the nearest cross member to have some strength.

Remove the pillar cover, why? Too much work for me. I believe you could fish from overhead light to overhead light and then down the A-Pillar. This approach will keep you away from the side airbags as well.
