How hard is it to swap out the factory amp? I don't want to spend a ton of cash. I am just looking for a little more bass.

You do not have to "swap" out the amp if you do not want to. You can just not use the sub channels and use an single amp for the sub. Get a line out converter and tap into the rear speakers to get your signal. The sub channels seem filtered down a bit and most amps will have their own x-over that will do a much better job.

Where would I be able to get one of these foam rings to space the panel out? Something I could get at a local craft store or something?

I just put the new CVT 8" in my HHR. It fits perfectly with no spacer needed. Most of the ones here look like they are the older model CVT. I covered the stock box in Dynomat and then carpet to help with the problems that the plastic box presents. Pictures to follow.

My HHR did not come with a factory sub
How much work is involved in putting in a factory sub.
My HHR I traded in had a factory sub and the stereo system sounded much better.
Is it just a factory sub and amp I need to install?

Go to wrecking yards and see if you can find one that's gone un-noticed. The sub, box, and amp are an assembly, so if you can find one it's easy one stop shopping.
