Yes the factory setup is odd. That made looking at speakers more confusing than helpful.

I simply popped in the new Rockford Fostgate coaxials and left the factory tweeters alone. As aradmahogany said above I do have to pump the volume up just a hair but I have dramatically better sound quality. I really only drive the car back and forth to work now days so having higher end speakers wasn't worth it for me. Also the OP asked about "inexpensive yet good sound". Of course that's relative but there are plenty of aftermarket options available that won't break the bank and will still be better than the factory speakers.

Unfortunately the factory plugs don't fit all aftermarket speakers. I had to cut my wires and wire in the supplied connectors. But most speakers will fit in the factory mounts.

2 seconds with a hot soldering iron had the factory connectors on the new speakers.

Hey, just out of curiosity, since I just changed all of my speakers. I measured the factory speakers and they are indeed all 4 ohm, with the tweeters being 2 ohm.

Meaning the rear doors are a 4 ohm load to the amp and the front doors are a 1.4 ohm load to the amp. I didn’t measure the sub yet, but I do know it is a dual voice coil.

P.S. That is for the premium system.

I also replaced all with Fostgate coaxials and left the factory tweeters. Sounds a lot better.
I got connection adapters for the speakers from Crutchfield for free.
