Well it is what it is, now the stereo installer can do exactly what he wants.

I`ve done a few systems (at home) and you`re gonna have to either get a head unit that has something like a "loud" button, or an eq. that is programmable so the sub is out of the loop.
JVC units have a soft setting, no bass, as an example. And eq presets.
A professional installer could put a switch in the loop to disconnect the sub, but the amp still needs to stay powered up.

The OEM radio has an EQ in it. Just hit the button on the top right side of the radio that has the music symbol on it and turn down the bass.

Yeah I know, seems as though they didn`t want to use those functions, so away we went..
PS, at first you`re trying to lower your volumn for the kids, then you`re trying to get your kid to lower the volumn...

99% of aftermarket radios have a BLUE wire that is the remote turn on for an amp or pwr antenna. All you need to do is break this wire with a switch to have manual control over thr remote power. In all of the 100+ aftermarket systems i have installed (non in an HHR yet) i have always put a remote kill switch in. Get a toggle switch that is rated 15 amps or better. THat way if for some reason there is a power surge in the vehicle the switch will not fry.

Other brands that have this feature are Fosgate and JL. I'm pretty sure there are more out there if you look around. Let us know what you decide on

My Sony Xplod has a bass knob, too. I can turn it all the way down, which returns me to the factory sound.

Ditto. I turn my bass knob all the way down when I'm listening to talk radio like Espn radio, NFL radio, blue collar radio (Sirius) etc. Turning the bass knob all the way down leaves me with just my door speakers which are powered by an amp and still sounds good...
