Yeah David, if you go from the base head unit to the singe CD/MP3 or the multi disc CD/MP3 head unit, you have to head to the dealer for programming. The head units are an integral part of the GM LAN system that interconnects all the electronic "guts" of the HHR.
The going rate seems to float around $60-80 for the service, but unless you have a scan tool with the proper capabilities and the service manuals, its not a DIY proposition.
Your other alternative is to go with an aftermarket head unit and adapter harness to let it talk to the HHR, no programming required in that situation.
