Help! Trans issues!

I purchased my 2.2 LS (5 speed) a couple months ago and up until last week it has been a peach to own and drive, but this past week my 1st and 2nd gear have gone out sequentially. I brought it to a trans repair shop, where they checked the shift linkage, but no dice. They say it is internal. Anyone else have similar issues with the f23 trans? Had it diagnosed? HELP!
