No, the 2.2 is not direct injection. As for the improvement in mileage, VVT helps, but most of that is from remapping the fuel delivery programming in the ECM.

My parents have the 2.2, I have the 2.4.... Both autos (unfortunately! LOL!) The 2.4 has quite a bit more up top. The milage is comparable if you baby it, drops off more with the 2.4. I notice a difference in power with reg vs. premium fuel also. More power and mileage in my case. Also, the engines are different because I have a slightly harder time getting to the oil filter cap on my 2.4 vs. the rent's 2.2. My 2.4 is an 08 and the rents is an 07.

Deuces-

I have an 08 2.4 also. The intake manifold is bigger, making access to the oil filter cap lil harder than the 2.2

wolfman-

I think some others with 09 & later 2.2 would disagree with you..

Well, as my now former HHR was a 2009 model, I can certainly attest first hand that it definitely was NOT a direct injection engine.

I went searching on this and have to agree..VVT was what the 2.2 received.. the 2.0 is the only true DI unless you have a Opel something or other that had a 2.2 with 10:1 comp, bigger cams and DI...which interestingly enough had a GM kit option to adapt a supercharger from a 2.0...hmm, I think its all european though. Not avail here....?
