ECOTEC 2.4L Questions: What is this?

You may be right on the tube thingy, but yes there is a timing probe that used a tube identical to the one in the picture. Many engines in the 80's and early 90's when cars still had electronic ignitions but were mechanically adjustable (although they were on the front of the engine) did use these probes which were nothing more than a timing light device.

Does that mean that we can remove the tube to clean up the enigne bay a little bit more? Once, I get my CGS I will look for some more little things to clean up the engine bay. Also would it be a bad idea to remove the insulation on the hood? maybe it will cool down the engine bay by a degree or two.

AHNK! (Warning buzzer!) DO NOT remove the hood insulation unless you want to see paint fade first-hand. The temp under the hood will heat and fade your paint in a very short time without the insulation.

Just a warning...

I guess that would explain why the paint on the hood of my 84 RX-7 is toasted as well. There was no insulation when I bought it and Rotarys run extremely hot. Thanks for the warning.
