I help justify my continuing to use OnStar not just by the extra cell phone service, but by the money I save on my auto insurance. As already mentioned, it works like Lojack, and that gets me a reduction in my premium. By the way, I carry an extra key in my pocket-not the electronic key that starts the car. What I did is bought a cheap one that just opens the door, and I cut it down to be very small. Then, I took my spare electronic key and hid it in the car behind a panal. Much easier to carry my cut down key-in fact, I have cut down keys of all 3 of my vehicles as well as my house key all together. They fit nicely in one of those little cloth wallets used to hide a key.

yes, it was about 1000 yards from a Verizon Wireless cell tower

also, my son has a 06 Chevy which came with onstar. He did not renew the onstar, but can still use the phone service.

i could be wrong,,,,,,,, but i dont believe the onstar depends on verizon....... its the other way around..... you have to have onstar operatable in order to have the hands free verizon phone to work.

I've got 2 HHRs, and a Sierra. Can they be keyed alike, like doors at home and office? That way we need only carry a single key for all vehicles...

That is a great question. I would guess if the blank is the same, it could be done but you would have to bring the lock cylinders and ignition to a locksmith. I wonder if they sell universal door locks that could be used on any vehicle. Then, you could just hide the igntion key inside the car somewhere, and one key would get you into all of your cars. Either that or just get the same brand alarm system and have all of the codes programmed the same.

I guess he just got lucky if he can still use it, this is directly from the onstar website:
"Note: You must have an active subscription to use your Hands-Free Calling minutes. If your OnStar subscription expires, any unused calling minutes will be lost. "
And with Verizon: "Minimum one-year remaining OnStar subscription and one-year Verizon Wireless contract required."

As far as I'm concerned, it's getting worse. The Sirius effect has already started...lots of repetition and the playlists are getting shallow.

I have 3 subs and will be not be renewing at least 2 of them because of this.
