5 speed manual can't shift to 5th

Hello Experts. I am new to the forum and not very car savvy. My 2009 SS has a short shift that the previous owner installed a few years back. I can no longer shift into 5th gear. It is like the shifter is hitting a wall. I have no issues with any other gears or reverse...no grinding, no slipping. I have read numerous threads, but have not found this issue as yet. Any ideas of what the problem may be before I take it into a transmission specialist? Thanks!!!

First thing I would do is look at the linkage on top of the trans while the shifter is being manipulated; look for any obvious blockage or disconnections.
Next, I would remove the trim around the shifter and look for obvious blockages or disconnections.

I don't know why you would take it to a "transmission specialist", more likely it is a simple mechanical problem in the cables.

You bought it like this? If not, tell us the story of it's failure.

Quite often, this is fixed by a simple cable adjustment at the shifter.

Thanks DonBrew for the info. Like I had mentioned, I am not that car savvy and to me, the gearbox is all part of the transmission network. I took the car to the mechanic and unfortunately it is not a simple fix. Their tests point to a rod issue at the transmission and since it is beyond their scope, it needs to have a specialist look at it. I am waiting on the transmission shop to call with an appointment. How I wish it was something as easy as you have mentioned. I guess I am not that lucky. Will update thread after they look at it. Thanks again!!!
