Also as a separate but related question... with the engine running and warm, should there be suction at the purge valve when i disconnect the tube?
Sometimes. it is a PWM 0 to 100% duty cycle depending on need.

Well here is an update that I am not really happy to give.

While out driving today which was about 35 miles of mostly local driving, I received a Check Gas Cap message at about 5 miles, the car hesitated several times throughout my trip and I got a backfire while doing a slow pull away from a stop sign.

I can’t stress enough, get an AC Delco gas cap specific to your HHR’s year and engine. I’ve experienced aftermarket caps that failed quickly.
