I would not need onstar to tell me to buy the stage 1 kit lol, I have a husband telling me that everytime he gets in the car, although i think i need to get on the phone and do some shopping around, if i remember correctly it was 1040.00 plus 2 hours to install, and they cannot get one until later march, at first our dealership was lost, not sure what I was asking about, then they called back with that info. in anycase i just wanted to see if anyone else had run into this onstar thing, cause you just never know now a days.

Anyway, mine called me today out of the blue, just as a coincidence, and it said my driving habits indicate a very long string of daily commutes without a break. It suggested I take a day or two off.

That might make for the most original reason to call out from work yet!

Your best bet might be to order it online from the states than take it to a dealer to install it. It might be around $800 CDN after exchange.

I was gonna order it online myself but I have family in the GM parts business so I can get it at cost plus a bit which is still bloody expensive, over 700 bucks.

The black boxes on the modern cars will hold data as to RPM ranges and such. They dont need OnStar to handle that.
OnStar WILL however respond to an increase in G force data such as encountered in a series of high speed turns that could be interpreted as a crash. The black box data is part of the air bag system and records the 45 seconds before a crash or deployment of the system.
Motorweek magazine was doing a slalom test of an GM SUV and had OnStar call to see if everything was OK.They can also hear inside of the vehicle. In 2003 the United States Apeals Court ruled that the government could use the onboard cell phone feature to eavesdrop on drivers.
Now personally Im not a conspiracy nut or anything, just stating the facts.

Wow... If you think about it though, they really could. I mean, sell it in everyone's car as a standard option. People like it, and think it's a safety feature. Turns out "big brother" is listening in.

Now I'm not saying that's what they're doing, but I could see how people could think that, or how corrupt governments could use it...

yeah-- about onstar-- i was having problems with my passenger side air bag... i know why now, but i called onstar and asked them if they detect issues with the vehicle, namely the air bag--- the guy said yes- so i asked him to do a scan, said it would take 30 seconds, then all of a sudden i hear "your onstar session has ended" !@#$!@# onstar is crap... i received my "onstar service report" in my email telling me about the vehicle... sure it told me i needed to rotate my tires (already did at 5K miles- 6600 on it now) but NOOooooo it never told me about my disfunctional passenger air bag!!! im yanking that piece of crap onstar radio out of my car as soon as i put together the pieces to make my audio system fully functional

i really dont think onstar is as elaborate as people would like to beleive, but they can listen in at any time, which is why i crank the radio almost to the point of blowing the craptastic stock speakers-- if not, then i was thinking about putting an inline switch mod for the microphone--- even if they TRIED to listen in, they wouldnt get any audio signal

I never use onstar for anything. Its a giant waste. The ONLY good feature about it is they can detect and accident. Well congrats, so can pedestrians, other drivers, and surviving passengers in your vehicle lol. I have a Garmin GPS, a CELL PHONE that doesnt cost 239847290384723 dollars per minute of use, and I dont feel like having the government know about what I'm planning to eat for dinner that night... So realistically you could just pop the little mic cover off, dismantle the damn thing and toss it straight into the garbage.
