Thanks for posting this How to Guide Crazysteve. It really helped me a lot to be able to put my shifter cable back on today. Got a little carried away with a speed-shift to 3rd!!
Another thing I would add is that it helps to get at the shifter assembly to also remove the plastic shroud below the boot. Remove the small rubber liner in the rectangular coin slot piece in front of the boot. Carefully pull and pry that plastic piece out. You will find (2) 9/32 head screws behind there. Once they are removed you can lift up the shround, carefully popping it up off the clips that are holding down the back edge. This gives you better access to the bottom of the shifter where the cables attach.
