Interesting info CJ, hadn't heard anything about the Bankhead Highway since 10th grade history class. It's pretty easy to find and drive here in NC, the road is still very much in use as U.S. 29, drive it every day.

CJ's awoken the "history buff" part of my brain, stopping by the library next week to see what they've got on the Bankhead Highway.

10th grade was a long time ago, but I seem to remember some old markers still around, now to find the photos from way back when.

We have a Bankhead Tunnel here in Mobile, Alabama. It was originally known as the John H. Bankhead Tunnel.

It appears that the tunnel and the National Highway were named after the same person.
Although, the tunnel is not part of the National Highway.

It goes by my workplace on US 1 and takes an oddball turn just down the street at Arcadia, VA (historical marker "turn in Sheridan's Raid"). Sheridan turned off of the direct road to Richmond and attacked from the West instead of the North, unsuccessfully, but wait that's where Appomattox is.
