Route 66 was mostly taken over by I-40 from OKC on West. There are some cool little places where the old Route parallels the interstate. I have stayed in some cool old strip motels on Route 66 on some of my adventures. I remember one place had a little plaque on the door that read 'Bill Haley slept here.' Almost every room had a plaque with a different celebrity. True or not? I have no idea but it was cool.

This would be a great fantasy run.

Start at either end of Rt. 66. and have groups of HHr's drive it through their own region until they get to a group from another regoin who'd then go to the next one along the way.

Could take weeks to finish but it would be cool!

That would be quite a big project to orginize a trek for HHR's. Might that be along the route of where CJ is proposing a national gathering for next year?

Mr. B and I participated in that very thing.
VW sponsored a trek across the USA along Route 66 for the movie promotion, Herbie Fully Loaded. Mr. B in his VW Baja and I in my VW Westfalia bus, road with the caravan along Route for about 60 miles. We recieved participation pin dash plaques. It was an honor as a VW owner to have traveled along with Herbie, ol' 53!

Although in this picture is not the orginal Herbie, it was in a trailer for this portion of the trek. Herbie was to be driven from Oatman AZ across America.

Spring Fall? here is Arizona it is all the same. But you get diffrent views just like back east diffrent colors on the trees ect. Temps here would be about the same.
You will have to keep us updated on when you make the trip, I am sure those of us down in Phx may be up for another run along route 66 at least I would be

Trees? Theres's no steenking trees in Arizona! haha...

Okay, there are... But I don't think you would want to try to plan a trip through Arizona because of tree color. Some of the AZ guys may be able to tell you better, but in my experience, there are a lot of evergreens there and the weather is so mild that color is not much of a factor.

I'm from GA and TN myself and you can get really spoiled with the colors every fall. That is one thing I miss since I have lived in CA.

Kind of an update for you, and I need to add this is just MY OPINION...

Trying to "run" US 66 is kind of a waste of time.

I tried this on my recent trip, on the return leg. Found out that most of 66 runs withing 100 feet of the interstate highways, so you see exactly the same thing from the Interstate.

My suggestion would be to drive the interstate then get off on the "business loop" when you hit the small towns, to see the old 66 places. Most are well marked as "scenic Old 66".
