Sounds like you and I should start the "I remember when detergent oil was the newest thing club", or more affectionately known as IRWDOWTNTC.

Can one even buy non-detergent oil now? Or is that what diesel engines use?

You can still buy non-detergent oil whopper, if you look for it hard enough, its still favored in some stationary engine applications and antique cars. I believe modern diesel lubricants are all detergent type oils these days have to check with my service manager to be sure though.

Yeah, my chain saw AND my gas powered pressure washer still uses straight 30W with no additives. I buy it at Sears and a few other places.

Yup Snoopy forgot about small engines, sell the house and loose the lawn, you just forget about trimmers and mowers etc. Sometimes we miss having our own yard, but I sure don't miss the mowing, trimming, and assorted other "joys" of lawn care.

Auto Parts usually has Valvoline non-detergent. Tractor Supply & similar carries many brands..

I work at the GM Tech center and know some of the people in Research who developed the OLI. It was used back in 1988 in the Oldsmobiles with the driver info centers. It was an algorithm that calculated oil life based on numerous inputs such as run time, engine temp, rpm and more. It was pretty good then and it has been improved upon since then. The Fuels and Lubes group I believe was the innovator of it and they are some smart and talented people plus they are gear heads that believe in what they are working on. I f they say the oil is good for that many miles I believe them, but everyone needs to do what they feel is the best for them. Oil has improved quite a bit over the last 30 years. I also changed oil at the first 1000 miles, it is just a habit. Now that I am using synthetic I change oil every 6000 miles. It just makes me feel better because I will have this car for quite a long time. My friend uses amsoil and changes oil once a year with a filter change at 6 months on his 99 g van and he has 190,000 miles and the engine is very clean and runs like a top.

Yappers I have a brother inlaw /outlaw and 2 cousins that work at the GM tech center . true brain trusts . But I also know a couple there that are smart and take pride in what they do so I guess its a wash .

And ya we keep all our cars a long time ! So changing the oil every 3000 is me being a old Fart and set in my ways besides iam retired and and got plenty a time and IMHO it don't cost that much to change it anyway . But then on the other hand I will blow out a air filter with my air compressor if its not real dirty and use it go figure
