my new hhr with window tint
That's a good one Hillsdale!!
I can see why the police are paranoid! But like you said the ones in the back could have the weapons.
I am going to have mine tinted this week I think.
Our laws in Wisconsin are 35% rear and rear side windows, 50% front side.

I'm a little late on jumping into this discussion but I under really don't understand the big deal about window tinting laws. These laws have been established for reasons and those reasons are primarily safety ones.
I can understand the need for a UV protectant in the case of sensitivity for eyes or skin but UV protectants can be applied which are clear.
The most important thing when driving a vehicle is the ability to see what is happening around you. Anything that can impact your visibility beyond a certain point can make for a dangerous situation. I understand the concern police officers have with respect to approaching vehicles and the neccesity to see the occupants, I feel uncomfortable pulling up beside vehicles at certain times in certain areas which have deep window tint and I'm just minding my own business.
Pedestrian safety is also affected with window tint around the driver. I always like to make sure that the drivers can see me before I cross a street and that usually means making eye contact. If you can't make eye contact safety deminishes.
These laws are pretty simple to follow and they really don't hurt anyone. If you think they infringe upon your rights as a person, tough! Get over it.
If you don't want to be seen, don't go outside. If you don't want people to see what you have in your vehicle conceal it or leave it at home.

Up until moving back to Michigan I've always tinted my front windows 35%. This in no way affects your visibility and you can still see in. I was told by a Michigan State Trooper there is a direct correlation with tinted windows and drug dealers
http://www.tintlaws.com/ has a nice chart breaking down every state, as well as links explaining the laws in those states. Tinting the front windows in forbidden in NJ
