2006 HHR - RPM Needle Problems????
What I'm reading is this seems to happen when braking or the the brakes are applied.
I would think that maybe you have a vacuum leak in the brake booster system.
Question. Do your brakes seem to take more pedal pressure than normal ?

After more thought, there is a chance it could be the EVAP canister purge solenoid sticking, but after replacing a bad brake booster on my '06 I can say that the vacuum leak caused a "ropey" idle...but no stalling.
And I think the OP would have mentioned hard stopping george, because when the booster packs it in, the braking effort goes from normal to "both feet on the pedal".

It could be a problem with the torque converter staying locked so the engine stalls when stopping.
Try shifting the transmission to neutral when stopping.

My HHR RPM needle bounces a lot and it then it drops to "0" and the car shuts off.
>>Nothing else happens, no engine light,.. nothing,. everything seems normal.
I put the car in PARK and then re-start the car and it starts fine without a problem.
The car shakes right before it turns off when the "RPM" needle goes to zero.

Thank you all for your help,. I was finally able to get it resolved and have had no issues since.
There were no codes, all the sensors were checked and everything was ok, which was very nerve-wrecking...
My freind cleaned out the (I apolize becuase i could be saying it wrong) I think he cleaned the throttle, there is a valve that opens and closes he said it looked very dirty and cleaned it with some MAF cleaner. After that I have had no issues with the car turning off.

Cool - glad to hear a success story. We'll try and keep those symptoms and the fix in mind. Darn cars sure can get complicated, with a number of items that can cause a single problem.
And Donbrew is right - "throttle body" is the name of that thingamajiggie.
