A/C Sporadically Cools
The numbers are on the RELAY the corresponding holes on the fuse box may not be marked.
Relay posts are standard for the most part.
The last T-stat I got was around $30 from GM and NAPA, but I've seen it listed at $50 ish.
The loud click may be the tabs engaging.
I would start looking for a refrigerant pressure switch. I think someone said there is a valve under it so you don.t loose any R134a. Still possible somebody gummed thing up with "leak seal", that stuff is known to break things when used by amateurs.

Aaaaaaah - relays have standard posts (mostly). Thanks - makes sense. Learn something new every day.
I'm fairly certain that it's not those tabs on the sides - it's the bolt that clicks and suddenly you have to re-tighten it.
Wish I had had time to order a t-stat online, but I wanted it pronto, so I blew the $50 in the name of expedience (RockAuto woulda charged for shipping, too, so it seemed almost moot).

I finally got to install my $50 AC-Delco t-stat today and I drained then flushed the green antifreeze and put in my $15 DexCool (can you sense that I resent the bucks I'm having to lay out here? heheheh)
The old t-stat seemed fine, old green antifreeze seemed a little too diluted.
No miracles - a/c still doesn't work. Wasn't really expecting it to work, but I agree that you HAVE to cover those basics. Will try to jump that a/c clutch relay at the fuse box to see if clutch engages next (hopefully tomorrow).
Thanks to all for monitoring my progress!

1 - I just read on another post that the cooling fan should be ON any time that the engine is running - is that right?? ...my cooling fan never turned on--even while flushing/filling/burping after replacing the t-stat and antifreeze. If that fan isn't on, perhaps that's why the a/c refuses to turn on??
2 - jumped relay and compressor turns on (air gets cool too)
3 - has anyone identified ALL the inputs required for the compressor to engage? ...should I hit the library and try Alldata for that?

JSK.
I may be slightly off on saying the fan should run all the time.
My SS has been parked about a week.
1. I went out and started it up, AC off. Cooling fan was not on.
2. Turned on AC. Fan was on.
3. Turned off AC. Fan stayed on.
4. Let it run for about 2 minutes total before turning off. Fan stayed on that 2 mins. even though the AC was off.
Granted, it never got to operating temp in those 2 minutes. I still think on the SS that the fan is supposed to run all the time with the AC off. Maybe it has some sort of delay before it initially turns on(timed, alternator voltage or whatever)
Since you got me curious, I'll try it again tomorrow. I'll do it without the AC or defrost and see when the fan finally comes on.

Ah ha.
I'll check mine again too. Time it also just to cover the bases.
JSK. If your fan never came on when doing the flush and refill, then sounds like that might be related to your AC issue.
Not really sure what to tell you to check next.

Thanks for the quick replies, guys -- I know that my a/c was turned "on," but the cooling fan was certainly not on. Nor did it turn on when temps were up to 185 while sitting in garage.
Even if the fan is NOT supposed to be on at every running moment, I may have stumbled on the problem (which, of course, may take another Act Of God to diagnose/repair. ...if I only had a brain... )
