Exclamation Door Lock Mechanism flaw design 2008

2008 HHR door lock mechanism has a design flaw in that it does not allow any manual override to work (i.e. key, door handle, knob) if the motor, linkages, gears, do not pull the tumbler full open or full close. It disables the slot needed for the manual items to work. If your key phob, gear shift leaver or inside door switch does not drive the motor enought or completely you are locked in or out of your car. I have tried oil, grease etc to no avail. I have disabled the drivers door wires to allow me to enter/exit my HHR. If your key phob does not drive 'A' door lock all the way open you are locked out and even a key smith can help. I suggest Chevrolet replace this design. I have never seen were the knob or inside door handle did not override the electric lock system. Denton ME. P.E

I agree with a lot of what you are saying

I just changed the small motor driving the lock and all is well. My manual lock pull at the top of the door was very difficult, but not impossible to move when the electric door lock did not complete the cycle of interior linkage movement.

The FOB activates the BCM, via the RCDLR, to send out a short duration voltage to the door lock(s). This often is not enough time to fully operate the locking mechanism when it is bad. I proved this to myself by using the electric lock switch on the door. By using the switch and not the FOB I was able to get the door to lock or unlock at will.

Curious, just what are you lubricating?

Sno White. What you experienced sounds like the problem I am having. What motor did you use and where did you get it. I was thinking I might have to buy the whole lock mechanism. Sure would appreciate a P/n and where to buy.

My motor just slides in and makes electric contacts. Very (too) simple But it takes three hands to hold and put the total lock assembly together.

the lock assembly acts like a light switch. it has a spring that snaps open or close. But if the motor does not have power or run long enought to pull it worm gear, then the open pie section does not move into a position so the manual linkages mov/slide into that open pie section. Most Electric Lock Systems do not over ride the inside door handle. Even my Toyota with the Blue tooth phob can open the door with the hardware key if the battery is dead so as to open the hood for a jump.

Door lock motor

Nice write up, just for clarification which motor are you suggesting to purchase the fine gear or coarse gear?

Course

"The important thing is that the motor from the manufacturer DOES NOT have a coarse toothed gear on the shaft. The ebay seller’s did have a course toothed gear making it perfect."
