Etching of paint on rocker panel and rear door rock guard
When a car is built 'with' a particlar part, the cost of doing so is bound to be different than an after purchase application.
With that in mind, how much, your estimate/best guess, do you think it costs during production, and how much after? Do you think they compare? And if GM eats the cost, ie: charged only the production based price, how/where do you think they recoup those loses?

I don't know and could care less about the cost. GM has a responsibility to their customers if they expect to keep them as customers. After realizing the problem they could have solved it by making the boards standard but continue to let unknowing consumers buy a product that they know will encounter problems.
You know what. Believe whatever you choose to believe.
I will continue to try to see what the dealership will offer me and that is my choice to do so.
I never have nor ever will demote myself to lying on the internet for any reason. If you want to call me a liar...fine. It is your misjudgement.
This is rediculous. I am done with this conversation.

Well I surely wouldn`t let Mrs. B/B go out buying cars and stuff... I guess I know better.
Guess what, you can get cheese on that burger, for a little more
Oops, never mind, you rethought that story line.
(Hope you can hold your ground better with the dealer.)
But if GM starts giving people free "options", I want a rebate check.

You know what - all the people here who don't have a problem and seem to only be here to bash or criticize those of us who feel we are stuck with having a vehicle that degrades excessively in both appearance and value with every mile and every new chip because Chevrolet has been aware of and trying to bury this problem since it first started as soon as the '06's hit the road ..I personally do not like the look of the boards. IF chevy was interested in finding a real fix for this problem, I would offer my vehicle as a test bed for possible permanent solutions as long as they agreed to either fix it so it will last as long as a vehicle with the boards or at very least supply the boards at Chevy's cost if no other solution can be found. - no profit at the affected owner's expense and let the dealer submit the install cost under the warranty. IF I had bought one with boards, the option price would have been negotiated just as the overall price was. Why are so many of the critical comments I read here made by people that have boards. As far as the statement saying that this problem only affects a few customers - I have been finding and checking all the HHR's I can and EVERY one without boards has the problem to some extent. There are many (the majority) people who do not go online to see what information is available. Many have been told by dealers that they are the only ones complaining and the chipping is caused by the way they drive. Almost half of the people I have asked if I can look at their HHR weren't even aware they had chipping. Amazing!! Finally, the consumer laws covering such problems as this must be stricter in Canada, or Chevy would not have made the boards standard equipment in 2007 and retrofitted so many '06s for free north of the border.

Why is it that every forum I visit looking for answers and hoping i find something to help my cause for a proper repair has Cap'n Crunch (aka Howdy) flaming , insulting and generally trying to embarrass people into just shutting up instead of doing something more positive... does howdy have boards? if he does..then he should go read a forum that applies to him. The people getting this problem have generally already been misinformed by Chevrolet concerning this problem of paint chipping. It is a design flaw and Chev is just trying to hide it to save the expenses it would cost to make it right for all the people that bought one off the lot that was not equipped with boards and was never advised by the dealership that there was a problem.
It annoys me that howdy has to stoop to name calling instead of using logic because his logic is flawed. Reminds me of kids on a playground.
Bottom line...EVERYONE that bought an HHR without running boards is subject to a design flaw that may cause excessive damage and depreciate the value and appearance of their vehicle and were NOT informed about the problem until it happened to them. Then , the dealer and Chevrolet want to make more profits at the buyer's expense. If I don't get my '07 fixed properly by the dealer/chevy cartel, you can bet I will contact the BBB.

I would love to be able to take some pics of my customized Imperial Blue 1lt '07 HHR - the time i have available to do such things has been eaten up by phone calls to the customer satisfaction line, visits to the dealer and such trying to find a soultion. I don't drive it much until I get the problem solved. Yesterday was the first time out in a week, and that was to go to a local car club meet in the next town over. My other ride is a '95 escort with 95,000+ miles on it with less chips than my 3 month old 2007 HHR - Don't tell me there isn't a problem!!!!
BWC.....
I think it's obvious you just came "uncorked". Three posts, on the same topic, in the same thread, all within several minutes of each other. Slow down your thinking and use some logic like you accuse others of not using.
First, it is NOT a DESIGN FLAW....it is a design mistake/oversight. I come from an design/engineering environment, and I can truthfully say this.
Second, GM has NOT been hiding this issue SINCE THEY INTRODUCED THE CAR. They installed wear pads from the factory, that were used on test mules, as a fix (not agreeing that it was the correct fix...just using logic to correct a misstatement by you) on the very first vehicle and continue to do so, when steps are not installed.
Third, as I mentioned in the other Forum that you are complaining in.....you are asking for a complete option for free. How about GM paints the repair and you pay the new car option price of the steps....you did complain you would have purchased the steps IF you knew they were needed.
If you have a complaint, grieveance, criticism of someone on another forum, you don't bring that issue to a second or third forum. It diminishes YOUR credibility.
Now, I believe GM SHOULD do something more in regard to this issue. And, I do know of several that have received fair services from their dealer (as I mentioned above). But, I also will say if the attitude displayed here is repeated at the dealer and GM....you are in for a long tough road. You may win, but it's going to cost you aggrevation and time. I'm giving you this as advise because I sat representing GM on several arbitration panels. Based on that, I have helped several people on these forums recover losses.
Good Luck.....with your endeavors

I'm back ! ! !
Coming up on a year soon that I got my running boards for free from gm. I see you are all still singing the same old song ...... I sent 'courthousedeb' the documents I got from gm , bbb,and my dealer . She was supposed to post them for all you goofy people who did not believe me . I don't know if she ever did .No matter. My black 2006 HHR has no dulling, fading or chipping since the running boards were put on. For all of you who initially got running boards as an option...good for you . Your car probably looks just the way it did when you drove it off the lot . HOWEVER , for all of us who really didn't like the looks of the running boards and were never told that our brand new car was going to look like crap in a very few miles if we didn't get those ugly running boards.....Well it's a much different story . GM knows , BBB will help with a few clicks on your computer . Say what you will , but if you are not the one with this problem then offer nothing if you can't help . You holier than thou people should go to another thread if this bothers you so much. You little sheep are the problem. Baa Baa Baaing all over this sight for a year still whining , complaining and calling everybody else the bad guy . I had a problem with my hhr , I got my facts from all involved , took the suggested steps and I got the problem solved .I never received hate mail from GM or my dealer after all of it , so really I could never understand what all you little sheep were so upset by my story and my results. You weren't making my car payments were you ? I haven't logged on in months hoping you little sheep might have gotten a life or better yet maybe you'd be out riding around in your HHR with running boards . No need to reply little sheep and you know who you are .
