Was using the pry bar but was afraid I was putting too much pressure on the innards of the tranny. How much force is it to get that off?

It’s more of a quick motion to pop the axle over the retaining ring , mine took two or three attempts and I used that bolt as a leverage point.

While using the pry bar method, try tapping the back part of the cape,( on the side) with a hammer.
You may need a helper for some extra hands.

The only thing you are trying to overcome is the circlip/spring. The passenger side is where the stub will probably come out with it, you do need to get it off to reuse.

Daughters friend came and gave a hand. Popped for him in under 5 minutes. Guess I don't have the right hand coordination down for it. He was telling me he was on a trip to Maryland and his buddy's axle broke and came apart like mine. He didn't have his tools with - used a rock and vise grips. I have to believe him because he got mine off with vise grips and a childs mini wood working hammer. That's a big HC after I spent a few hours with it. It was real nice of him to come on a Sunday morning. Races cars and Drifts at Riverhead and Englishtown. His goal is to open his own performance shop.

Glad he got it fixed for you.

Now, if he does open his own shop, I hope he's not planning to use a childs mini wood working hammer for his performance repair work.
