Liftgate Strut Problem (not the usual)
Liftgate Strut Problem (not the usual)
hi all
i have searched and did not see this so here we go:
my 2 struts are fine and keep the gate up fine.
this afternoon i lifted up the gate and the little ball mounted to the top of liftgate broke off. i had to remove the strut to get the gate closed.
is this a replaceable part ,or does the whole top mount(held on by 2 bolts)
need to be replaced?
basically can the little ball in the top mount be replaced?
i have searched gmparts direct and partstrain with no luck.
thanks,jeff

You need number five on this diagram judging from your description, its GM PN 22714202 and it lists for $!7.89
GM Parts Giant.com has the part for $12.79

OK sorry for the confusion then, if you broke the ball stud its number 8 on the diagram above and you need GM PN 11609286. Its available from GM Parts Giant.com for $4.20.

I just looked at our 2006 and it looks like the ball studs are part of the bracket. Look closely at the picture. Number 8 is the lower stud that attaches to the body and affixes the bottom of the lift strut. What you want is number 5 as 843de originally said.
The bracket on my car is color matched to the car. If you aren't worried about the color then get the bracket assembly.
If you want to retain the painted bracket, just drill out the old ball stud and install a threaded style replacement. I replaced a lot of the leaking struts on our fire truck compartment doors. Each strut cam with 2 new threaded ball studs. I've got a half dozen unused ones in my parts cabinet.
You can probably find a threaded ball stud at the "Help" section at your local parts store.

i will call the dealer to see how much the bracket and stud is.
if to much here in canada i will order from the usa ,or order the stud off ebay and drill out the old one.
thanks,jeff

New information on this problem:
Both the brackets in my 2007 HHR have broken at the small ball stud. The first time it happened I ordered one of the overpriced brackets.
Now, I find out the brackets are on backorder and some people have been waiting for months! I called my local dealer and the online dealer listed in this thread and they both confirmed these brackets are not available and they have no idea when they will be available.
So now what?!
I have decided to try to solve this issue the best I can. At this point I'm still working on a solution but here's what I've got so far:
1. Keep the old broken bracket. Drill out what is left of the little ball stud.
2. Buy a standard 10mm ball stud from a place like McMaster Carr. http://www.mcmaster.com/#9512k73/=oozeqi
3. Install the 10mm ball stud into the bracket using a lock washer and nut. I beleive there is enough clearance on the HHR for a threaded ball stud but I haven't confirmed this yet. I might have to cut down the threads or weld the ball stud. Not sure yet.
4. Buy a DIFFERENT lift rod than stock to match the new 10mm ball stud. I believe the old ball stud on the bracket was 5/16" or 7.9mm or something. It was obviously too small and hence keeps breaking. I think the lower ball stud (the one mounted half way of the door) is 10mm but not sure.
I know that Stabilus sells a lift rod for the HHR in stock configuration (with the smaller ball on the bracket). So I have asked them if they would give me a part number for a lift rod that is identical in every way to the rod on the HHR now with the exception that the top be sized for a 10mm ball.
When they give me a part number I plan to get one and try it out.
I'll come back here and let you know how it goes.
If anyone else tries something like this can you report it here please?
Thanks!!!
