Programming new transponder Key

Hey, I wanted to know what the "proper" method is to program a keytransponder key that I just had cut. I have my original one, which works fine. I just want a spare ignition key at hand.
I tried the method stated in the owners manual, but it didn't work. The theft symbol just kept blinking or either stayed stationary, but with either the car didn't start after about 10seconds of leaving it off.
Then I saw someone say something about 5 seconds, another said 10 Minute 30 seconds...
Please let me know the proper way (and should the doors be closed, and also should the car have been opened with the original key instead of the fob)

Maybe they have different transponders in Nigeria?

Does your new key match the original key, does it have the O with a + in the middle on the metal part of the key just below the black plastic of the key?

Like this one?

I found this video for adding a key if you have a working key already

I bought the key on aliexpress and had it shipped here
It does have a transponder in it (I opened the case and saw there was a tiny plastic "box" seated in between the metal key.
Here's a picture of the fob and key I got

they also said it fits the hhr

Well.
1. Both of the pics show the "wrong" style key for the HHR. The HHR key should have the small keyring hole.(after the ignition recall of 2014)
In other words. Keys with the large keyring slot are NOT the recommended key for a replacement.
2. Allen P shows a pic of a key without the transponder marking........aka, most likely the wrong key.
3. And how did you "open the case " on the key ? The black plastic on the key is molded on. Not able to "open".

If there is a transponder it is not The correct one. The + in a circle indicates PassKey 3 system, anything else won't work. It will serve as a door key.

--So sorry for not getting back about the key. turns out the key wasn't compatible (just like you said) so I was lucky enough to get 80% of the money back. Haven't tried anything with it, it's been lying around--Thanks so much for the advice
