steering locks while turning

came on all of a sudden have to tug back and forth to unbind

Under what conditions are you talking about? While parked? while driving?

aboard buzzie!

To say that "binding/locking" steering is a "Don't pass Go, head to your dealer NOW" safety issue is probably a huge understatement.

You may have a failing EPS(Electric Power Steering) motor or other issue, check out the link below as GM has a Warranty Extension Program in place for the HHR's meeting certain criteria.
