"Three chimes will sound", doesn't seem to be what is happening here. You're going to have to connect the dots here, donbrew, what's your train of thought?

Can at least turn it off or on and see what happens. I don't trust other peoples subjective descriptions of sounds. For one thing; this started out as it won't stop dinging, now it's well, it does stop when you close the door. Maybe next it will be seems like forever, but only 3 times with long intervals.
Evidently, it does not start chiming again when the door is reopened.
What we have been told:
1. the door open sensor works both ways
2. the neutral/park switch works (doors lock)
3. the shift interlock works (no mention of sticking or clicking)
4. the key sensor works (shift interlock)
5. we are told the interior/exterior lights are not on.
6. none of the doors is ajar

Have we asked if the shifter can be moved without the key in?

Maybe some paranoid previous owner randomly disabled one of the safety features the wrong way and just didn't care about the chime. Since the car starts every time there is nothing killing the battery.

Much easier and cheaper to give it a try than keep throwing parts around. The only inconvenience involved is RTFM, but that seems too big an ordeal.

I keep getting the feeling this is going to end up being "jiggle the steering wheel" things.

I read TFM!
I never said anything about locking the door with or without the fob .
try this go sit in your car put the key in the ignition, open the door I bet you will hear chimes. Take the key out and the chimes stop?? Mine DON'T!! Until I close the door. I'm not locking the door with or without the fob just opening and closing .
I have jiggled and wiggled the key and steeringwheel no change.
the key does not seem to be as snug in the ignition as my truck.

back up lights, signal from park/neutral switch.
heated seats
ABS computer

I am thinking the park/neutral switch may be the problem except the doors lock and the DRL comes on when you put it in gear.
Since it was doing it when you got it I would guess that a previous owner did something to the wires. Maybe spliced into the white wire thinking is was a switched circuit like in the 1960's.

So, you won't even try enabling/disabling the delayed lock feature? Did I miss where you did?

After reading back thru all the posts, I'm thinking the ignition key cylinder is the culprit. I know on mine, the door open ding won't stop until the very end of the key clears the lock cylinder. Some little spring loaded part in the lock cylinder is what sends the signal thru the ignition switch.

thanks , when I replaced the ignition switch it didn’t look like there’s any electrical through the lock cylinder . But that’s what was in the back of my head as suspect. Do ya think it can be removed and cleaned without much trouble?

You said the key does not seem to be as snug as it should be.
If that's so, then I would think you should replace the key cylinder instead of trying to fix the old one.
