Timing chain
I replaced both Intake and Exhaust Solenoids but the Check engine light won't go out and I'm still getting a code reading of P0016. The car appears to drive and run fine except it chatters a little when warm. If it could be as simple as the Camshaft Sensor, where is it as I do not see it on this diagram? Thank you

My car is at 138,000 miles or 222400km. If the timing chain is off one tooth, does it need to be replaced or can the timing chain be reset? I have the p0016 code and replaced the Solenoid Valves. The code remains on, and the car still runs fine without stalling or hesitation, no misfiring, etc, just chatters a bit when warm. Canadian Tire advised I need to replace the Chain and Tensioner ($250 )as well as recommended the Water pump ($100) and said at the same time I must change the oil ($50) as well as have a Coolant Flush ($187) then Labor $575 plus tax I'll be at over $1400...Do I need all of this? I understand the Chain, Tensioner and Oil... or can it just be reset?

I just did all that to 2011 we bought….they are pretty well telling you right…I would add replacing VVT valves. Its not that hard to do yourself if you are incline too and save labor cost

But anyway, I’m seeing a disturbing amount of complete BS advice on HHR Facebook groups ( and it’s getting worse) with users chiming in when they clearly have no clue, giving matter-of-fact counsel with obviously insufficient information and asking no questions. I bet if you searched “It’s the sensors” you’d find it 10,000 times, and almost every time they really don’t mean sensors at all, but solenoid valves. One goofball even advised replacing the “sensors” for an evap code, lol.

If the chain jumped a tooth the guides are worn out and the chain is stretched. Continued use can lead to catastrophic failure of the chain.
$250 to replace the chain is cheap, all of that other stuff is elective unless the water pump is bad. It is easier to replace the pump when replacing the chains than waiting for it to fail.

The P0016, is also a result of a loose chain or broken front guide.
I’ve replaced many timing chain sets, if your careful you don’t need to change the oil or coolant, or the water pump.
I do recommend Cloyes timing chain and balance shaft chain kits. And if you’re handy it’s about a 3 hour job.
