Transmission stuck in neutral

I have a 2007 hhr panel 2.4 and I was driving, came to a stop sign and the transmission seem to have shift into neutral but the shift level was still in drive. The car would not move forward. I put the lever into reverse and it would not go backward. I put it in park and it would not lock into park and would still coast. I looked under the hood and saw that the linkage would move at the transmission, so there seems to be no linkage problem. So I asked a transmission what could be the problem and he said that the transmission would need to be rebuilt and it would be 1800 dollars. so my question really is has anyone here experienced this problem and what's the solution.

With the information you have given we can't tell you anything. Does it need to be rebuilt? How are we to know without testing of some sort. Did they test it? What were the results?

That seems high to me. Why not get an actual estimate, not a I asked a guy and he said...
Ask what a "rebuild" is. Usually it is just a new valve body and valves.

All functions instantly turned off - not typical for a breakdown of transmission guts.
More like a loss of connection with the transmission.
Or the hydraulic fluid pressure suddenly dropped (maybe the pump stopped working or there was a hole in the line). The guys wrote earlier that inside the 4T45E transmission there is a weak device “a bunch of tubes”, this crap often gets holes in the seam and fails..

If it won't go into park... doesn't seem like a fluid transfer problem. Sounds more like a shifter cable issue. But you say the shifter cable seems to be connected and working properly. I don't know a lot about automatic transmissions, but it seems to me that park would be a mechanical thing, not hydraulic thing. Am I wrong?

I’m thinking fluid transfer pipes cracked .

Easy to change order a new pan gasket and transmission fluid filter

This is a good possibility. Check this pipe.

I agree with RJ. Just because the cable moves doesn't mean it moves enough.

I like you all answers because I think 1800 is high as well so I will have to tow it somewhere to get it checked
