Vibration at 50mph

First, let me start by saying that I am not mechanically inclined. Does anyone else experience a pretty substantial vibration at around 50 mph. Up to that everything is smooth, and the same after, but at 50 there is definitely something going on. It is noticeable enough that as I am driving and not looking at the speedometer, I can tell when I hit 50 based on the vibration. Driving an '08 SS Auto. Thanks a bunch.

Does it go away at higher speeds? Or just get worse? Somewhere around 50 is where the torque converter kicks in and that can put out a pretty annoying vibration. Speeding up a bit/hitting the gas should silence that. Otherwise, if it is 50 on up, I would check your tires. I had a bad tire that caused a vibration at highway speeds... by the time I saw how bad it was there was a very noticeable bulge in the sidewall.

I seldom venture over here because I'm a lowly normally aspirated guy, 2.2LS and 2.4 LT on order....but I'd check the tires first. You might be dealing with a converter chuggle, but I'd bet on the tires.

Thanks for the information. It does go away if I give it some gas. That is what I was trying to portray in the original post, that it seems to be right at 50 mph. It doesn't happen before or after that. I'll be at the dealership Saturday and see what they say.

you have an auto, right? Right around 50 is where the torque converter kicks in and sometimes it can vibrate quite a bit if you are light on the gas. If you put it in I (which will keep the converter from engaging), does it still vibrate at 50mph? If not, it is probably the torque converter in the trans engaging and probably nothing to worry about. If it still vibrates when you hit 50 in I, it's probably a bad or out of balance tire.
