You are not dead, yet.

You are aware that gasoline fumes are explosive?

It sounds like an issue with a connection that is not under pressure, perhaps at the EVAP canister or the over fill tube.
Disconnect, inspect each fitting , there would be 3.

Does it smell like gas even when you get home after a drive or just on a cold start?

Shop found leak in plastic line.

I had a gas smell and vapor leak code.

my shop found a leak in a plastic line above the fuel tank and fixed it with some plastic weld.

Funny I saw this, as I am also getting a bad gas smell from the DS rear tire area. Going to throw it up on the lift tonight and see what I can find. It's going to be difficult though since there is snow on the ground and the bottom of the car is most likely all wet.

Thats where the tailpipe is so..... do you only smell it when first starting the car or is it still there even after the car is fully warmed up.

Actually the fuel lines do go from the rear of the fuel tank out to the rear then across to the drivers side then forward to the engine bay. Maybe there’s a leaky pipe, look at any of the retainer clips for corrosion
