Code P0087 diagnosing the problem

Hello, I've been on the site for awhile and this is the first time the search feature hasn't helped me. I have a 2008 HHR SS that just recently went into reduced power mode and threw a P0087 code, low fuel rail pressure. My scanner shows the fuel pressure to be around 70 psi. I have found from my search that the high pressure mechanical fuel pump seems to be the cause of this problem, the majority of the time. My question is what is the best way to determine which fuel pump is the problem, if either. The HHR got me home, it was just a little slower than usual. I'm not the best mechanic in the world, but I would like to save myself a trip to the dealership. Thanks for any and all help.

The "high Pressure fuel pump" gets fuel from the pump in the gas tank and pressurizes it. The pressurizing is done by the rotation of the engine (cam driven is the term)... I would look into the possibility of the "fuel rail pressure sensor" being faulty first...also the fuel pressure should be anywhere from 600psi to 2176psi after the high pressure pump...not sure where your scanner gets its number from though

I'll definitely check the fuel rail pressure sensor, that looks to be a fairly inexpensive fix. I am suppose to borrow a friends gauges tomorrow, hopefully I'll get a chance to work on it this weekend.

one thing to note also...the pressure is ridiculously high(600psi+) be careful disassembling...there is a pressure relief valve if I'm not mistaken

Those pressures can be high as stated above. The RPD (If you have one) will display the pressures. Noticeably higher with a cold engine.
